Stocks of Tata Group
companies witnessed a solid year on Dalal Street ever since N Chandrasekaran,
the first non-Parsi Chairman of the Group in its 150-year history, took charge
on February 21 last year.
Data shows total market
capitalisation of all listed companies of Tata Group have soared by over Rs
1.25 lakh crore in last 12 months, with shares of Tinplate Company of India
(TCIL) and Tata Global Beverages BSE 1.54 % rallying 186 per cent and 86 per cent,
respectively. TCIL is the country’s largest producer
of tinplate.
If
things go well, Chandrasekaran would have capped his first year as Tata Sons
Chairman with possibly the biggest deal for the group in recent times, with
Tata Steel’s now-almost-certain acquisition of the debt-crippled Bhushan Steel
for Rs 36,000 crore. The Tata firm has reportedly emerged the highest bidder
for the Delhi-based company, which is under NCLT now.
Tata
Steel and Tata Consultancy Services BSE 2.04 % (TCS), the two major group firms,
have seen their market capitalisations rise by Rs 25,666 crore and Rs 78,195
crore, respectively, in last one year. Tata Motors BSE -1.18 % eroded investor
wealth, with market capitalisation shrinking from Rs 1.46 lakh crore as of
February 21 last year to Rs 1.17 lakh crore as of February 20, 2018.
Investment
guru Mark Mobius says he feels proud about one of his picks from the Tata
Group. “TCS has been a real winner for us over many years that we have been
investing in that company. There are many others. But this is the one that
comes to mind first,” he said in an interaction with ETNow.
For
the quarter ended December 31, 2017, TCIL posted 186 per cent year-on-year
growth in net profit at Rs 12.79 crore compared with Rs 4.47 crore reported for
the corresponding quarter last year, whereas Tata Global Beverages posted 30.51
per cent growth in consolidated profit at Rs 188.64 crore.
